Portuguese horses
Remnants from existing Iberian horses in the Iberian
Peninsula exist from much earlier than the foundation of Portugal providing
evidence to support that originally there have been two different types of
horses where today Portugal is. One type was an Iberian pony, characteristic
from the northern mountainous regions, with short hears and members, and head
profile straight or concave. The other type was a bigger horse than the first
type, could be found in the planes from the southern regions of the Iberian
Peninsula and had a head with convex profile. The Iberian pony evolved in
Portugal to what is today the Garrano breed. The Iberian horse is believed to be
very close to what is today the Sorraia breed in Portugal and from this horse is
believed that there was an evolution which in Portugal led to the Lusitano horse
breed. Lusitano horses are by far the best known and appreciated Portuguese
horses.
