Portuguese wine regions
The Douro region was delimited in 1756 and was the first wine region to be
delimited in the world. Until the beginning of the 20th century there was no
more delimitation of wine regions when several were created including Moscatel
de Setubal, Carcavelos, Colares, Dão, Bucelas and Madeira. With Portugal joining
European Union in 1986 the wine regions were re-defined and new were created
under the status of Controlled Denomination of Origin (DOC).
